The opening scene depicted in Ls 1&2 is not uncommon in some households; however, L3 reshapes the reader's perception of it, adding poignant agonies to the poem.

Unexpected and yet powerful ending.
The juxtaposed images (of "refugee camp" and "a cross") reveal the implied speaker's Jobian faith in the divinely transformative power.

Rita's Haiku in Asahi

Rita Odeh from Nazareth reworks a poem about viewing blossoms with a child. It won a Sakura Award in the 2008 Vancouver Cherry Blossom contest. In the April 20, 2012, issue of the Asahi Haikuist Network, she delayed the appearance of the season word until the third line. This heightens the reader’s interest in the child’s point of view. Positioning the plum blossoms on the first line can imply that both the child and Odeh are admiring and chatting about the blossoms simultaneously. If placed on the last line, a possible meaning of the poem could be that the child is coaxing the haikuist to look at something unbelievably beautiful. Chen-ou Liu admires the shape of a hand in Ajax, Ontario.

Bio Sketch

Rita Odeh is from Nazareth, Israel. She comes from a christian Palestinian family. She has B.A. in English and Comparative Literature from Haifa University. She has published 6 books of poetry,one book of short stories, three electronic novels, one e-book of haiku. Her poetry has been published in several international publications. Rita is Co-Editor of International Haiku Kukai. Her haiku and haiga artwork are featured in her "Catching The Moment" blog.

Rita's contemplative haiku reminds me of the following remarks:

“I know that mirrors give us a false sense of confidence.” I continued. “The reflection that we see everyday has nothing to do with how others see us. The glass lies.”

“It is when you lose sight of yourself, that you lose your way. To keep your truth in sight you must keep yourself in sight and the world to you should be a mirror to reflect to you your image; the world should be a mirror that you reflect upon.”

And according to Confucius' self-developmental milestones from age 15 to 70, "at 50, he declares he knows the will of Heaven."

The collocation of the sense of "being one" and "mirror reflection" stirs the reader's emotions and refection on the Buddhist concept of consciousness.
